Veterinary Dentistry in Bellaire

Give Your Pet a Happy, Healthy Smile

An essential but often neglected part of your pet’s health is regular dental care. Much like humans, the health of your pet’s mouth can affect their overall health. Dental disease is considered the most common disease affecting dogs and cats. Without proper care, dental disease can progress dramatically and cause your pet pain, loss of teeth, and infection. Southwest Animal Clinic is proud to offer a broad range of dental services to keep your pet smiling.

Don’t let your pet avoid the dentist. Call (713) 668-4466 or request an appointment online for your pet’s next dental exam.

Periodontal Disease in Pets

As the most common disease in dogs and cats, periodontal disease affects your pet’s gums and, if left untreated, can destroy their jaw bones. Plaque buildup causes periodontal disease in pets and humans alike. The bacterial film builds up on the teeth without proper brushing. When the bacteria dies, plaque hardens on the teeth, creating more places for plaque to build up. Without taking steps like brushing, or even chewing on hard foods or toys, the plaque can continue to build up and spread below the gumline. Once plaque moves below the gumline, it can cause infection and loose teeth. At this point, only professional dental cleaning can successfully remove plaque.

What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?

  • Loose teeth
  • Blood in saliva or your pet’s water dish
  • Smelly breath
  • Trouble eating

Regular dental care can prevent plaque buildup and periodontal disease. If you’re able, brushing your pet’s teeth or giving them hard food and toys to chew on can go a long way to staving off plaque buildup. Our Bellaire veterinary team offers regular dental checkups as part of your pet’s routine wellness exams. If we notice that your pet’s teeth need more than a quick brush at home, we may recommend professional cleaning.

Dental Cleaning at Southwest Animal Clinic

When pets need a professional dental cleaning, they need to be put under general anesthesia for an effective, complete clean. Southwest Animal Clinic’s surgical suite is full equipped to handle your pet’s needs while under anesthesia and will be monitored closely throughout their dental cleaning.

Dental cleaning includes:

  • Anesthesia monitoring – Your pet’s vital signs and breathing will be monitored throughout the procedure to ensure their safety
  • Scaling and polishing – Our Bellaire veterinary team will use tools similar to those used by human dentists to remove plaque and polish your pet’s teeth
  • Anti-plaque treatment – We will apply fluoride or another anti-plaque treatment to your pet’s teeth to discourage future plaque build up

Once your pet’s teeth are sparkling again, we’ll give you the resources you need to keep up with your pet’s dental health at home. Maintenance is key to keeping your pet’s mouth healthy. Be sure to schedule regular wellness exams so that your pet’s mouth stays happy and healthy.

If you have questions about dental cleaning under anesthesia, please don’t hesitate to call (713) 668-4466 or contact us online to learn more.
